Seeking an ADHD assessment, whether for a child or an adult, is a proactive step toward better understanding focus and behavior difficulties, and a professional evaluation with a mental health expert can provide the key to effective management and long-term improvement.

When should I get tested for ADHD?

Consider an ADHD assessment if you or your child consistently experience symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interfere with daily life. An ADHD assessment can determine if symptoms are ADHD-related or due to another condition, helping to create a targeted support plan.

Common Symptoms:
  • Inattention: Difficulty focusing, frequent forgetfulness, losing items, easily distracted, struggling to complete tasks.
  • Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty staying seated.
  • Impulsivity: Interrupting others, making hasty decisions, acting without thinking.

For children:
  • Behaviours are consistent across settings such as home, school, or other environments.
  • Struggling to follow through on projects or maintain focus in structured activities.
  • Consistent restlessness or inability to stay seated when required.
  • Difficulty regulating impulses, leading to frequent interruptions or acting without thinking.

For adults:
  • Trouble focusing on tasks at work, managing time, or staying organized.
  • Persistent difficulty in maintaining personal or professional relationships.
  • Symptoms have been ongoing since childhood, are consistent across settings, and cause significant functional problems.
  • Impulsivity leading to detrimental decision-making or acting too quickly in social or work situations.

What does an ADHD Assessment cover?

Detailed History

We collect personal and family history and assess childhood development, focusing on school performance for children and work and relationship dynamics for adults.

Symptom Evaluation

We will assess symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, encompassing concentration issues, forgetfulness, restlessness, and related behaviors at home and work.

Standardized Rating Scales

Questionnaires include self-report or informant-report scales such as the Conners’ Rating Scales and the ADHD Rating Scale. These are used to assess the frequency and severity of ADHD symptoms.

Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological testing measures attention, executive functioning, and cognitive ability might be used to identify cognitive deficits associated with ADHD (e.g., working memory, response inhibition). In some cases, clinicians may directly observe behavior in a clinical setting, especially in young children.

Biophysiological Measures

Following the neurocare framework of care, there are instances where we might evaluate the utility of biophysiological measures like actigraphy and/or QEEG, not necessarily for diagnosis, but to help explain symptoms and to aid in the planning and delivery of therapy, when suitable.

How can an ADHD Assessment help?

An ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) assessment can offer valuable insights, whether you are an adult who thinks you might have ADHD or a parent concerned about your child. The assessment provides clarity, helping to explain challenges with focus, hyperactivity, or impulsivity. Importantly, discovering you or your child has some symptoms of ADHD doesn’t necessarily mean expensive treatments or long-term care is needed.

A psychologist or psychiatrist experienced in ADHD can help you set realistic goals and strategies that fit into daily life. With the right guidance, many individuals manage symptoms effectively through practical approaches, without requiring intensive treatment. If you're open to more focused help, a specialist can recommend beneficial therapies or treatments, such as medication or behavioral techniques, to further support success.

Ultimately, an ADHD assessment empowers individuals and families with the knowledge and tools to manage symptoms, improve well-being, and thrive in school, work, and personal life.
